LAS VEGAS—The cute little robot ball Sphero 2.0 is one of our favorite smartphone-controlled toys because it works with 35 apps, from driving to augmented reality to party games. So while there are plenty of high-tech toys on display at CES 2014, a brand-new Sphero, the tubular Sphero 2B, has our engines revving.
Sphero 2B is fast. Really fast. It can go up to 10 miles per hour, twice as fast as the Sphero 2.0 ball. It’s tube-shaped, but its ends are round, so if it hits something and flips onto one of the ends, it’ll pull a cool-looking twirl and then flop back down onto its treads again. You can launch it 3 to 4 feet off even little jumps, since it’s got two points of contact with the ground, the handling is better.
The addition on an infrared sensor will allow multiplayer games, and it’s also got Bluetooth LE. But Sphero 2B is set to cost $99 when it’s released this fall—that’s actually $30 less than Sphero 2.0 sells for right now. Orbotix is taking reservations now, and we’ll have a full review when we can get out hands on one later this year.
