Lenovo's Miix 2 hybrid goes on sale early, but watch out for that wacky pricing
It wasn’t supposed to show up until March, but Lenovo’s 10-inch Miix 2 tablet with detachable keyboard is now available in the company’s U.S. online store, as first spotted by Engadget. But don't drop your hard-earned dough just yet, as something seems a bit… off.
When Lenovo showed off the 10-inch Miix 2 during the Consumer Electronics Show earlier in January, the company said the top selling price for the Atom processor-powered variant of the tablet would be $499. For that price, you were supposed to get a 10.1-inch tablet with 1920-by-1200 resolution, an Intel Atom Z3740 processor, Windows 8.1 (32-bit), Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013, 2GB RAM, 128GB eMMC storage, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0.
Those are pretty good features for a device with a detachable keyboard, the full version of Windows, Office, and an Intel Atom “Bay Trail” processor.
Now, let’s head over to Lenovo’s U.S. Store, where at this writing you could buy two different Atom-powered versions of the Miix 2, priced at $699 and $749. Both are already far higher than the previously announced $499 price point, but things get even more curious if you take a closer look.
What do you get for the extra $50 on the higher end model, you ask? Oh, just half the storage of the cheaper model. That’s right: for $749 you get just 64GB of onboard storage, while the $699 version packs 128GB.
Needless to say, something is wrong with Lenovo’s website right now and it’s not clear what the actual pricing will be. In Lenovo’s forums on Monday, one staff member said the pricing error would be corrected, but a day later nothing has changed.
Our recommendation: Hold off on buying the Miix 2 right now. Wait and see what happens after Lenovo updates its U.S. online store. We’ve also contacted Lenovo to see if we can get an answer about what the actual pricing will be.
The 10-inch Miix 2 is supposed to be the first of two different Miix 2 models to go on sale in the coming months. In April, Lenovo plans on introducing an 11-inch model with more powerful processor options, with announced pricing starting at $699.
