LG may go big with next Optimus G Pro

Last year, LG introduced the super-powerful and supersized Optimus G Pro, which boasted some of the brawniest specs available at the time. According to reports in the Korean press, the company is getting ready to unveil the next generation Optimus G Pro 2 at next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The report (in Korean) says that LG will bump the display on the G Pro 2 up a whole half-inch to 6 inches. If true, that will be quite a size jump over the previous generation; however, some of the biggest upgrades to the Optimus G Pro 2 will be on the inside.

The new phone will come equipped with 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 800 processor (a jump up from a Snapdragon 600 and 2GB of RAM), which will run Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Optimus LG Pro shows off its with simul-tasking capabilities at last year's release.  

The report also says that the LG G2 will have LTE-Advanced connectivity. While that doesn’t do much for US consumers yet, it will be a definite selling points for those with access to LTE-A networks being built in Asia and Europe.

If the Pro-phablet category is becoming a thing, then Samsung’s Galaxy Note series is certainly at the front of the nebulous pack. Unfortunately for LG, these reported specs don’t stand-out against the Note 3. In fact LG’s phone mostly appears to be playing catch-up.

Perhaps there are some KitKat-enabled software applications that will help the G Pro 2 shine; otherwise the phone might be just another big powerful phone with little must-have appeal.
