Newegg Premier is like Amazon Prime for PC geeks

Newegg has just rolled out a cheaper, geekier alternative to Amazon Prime, called Premier, with free shipping and other benefits for $50 per year.

Newegg Premier offers free Expedited shipping—guaranteed to arrive within three days—on all products, along with discounts on two-day and one-day shipping. Members also get free returns with no restocking fees, a dedicated customer service line, exclusive deals and advance notice on upcoming sales and events.

Premier might make sense for tech enthusiasts who are looking to jump ship from Amazon's $79 Prime service, especially in light of a potential $20 to $40 price hike. Being able to try new gadgets and return them for free definitely sweetens the deal.

But Amazon still has its own advantages, including free two-day shipping, the Prime Instant Video streaming service, free e-book rentals for Kindle device users and a much larger selection of non-tech products.

If you want free expedited shipping on more than just tech stuff, you're better off sticking with Amazon Prime, or subscribing to Shoprunner, which offers free two-day shipping from a long list of stores including Newegg. (Shoprunner also offers free return shipping on Newegg purchases, but won't waive restocking fees.)

Newegg has labeled its Premier service as a “beta” for now, but is offering a free 30-day trial if you sign up by February 18. You also get 100 Eggpoints, equal to a whopping $1 worth of merchandise.
