As a kid, I always wanted my picture on a baseball card. As an adult who’s more likely to eat a slider than hit one, I’ll just have to settle for getting my picture on a baseball jersey.
That opportunity comes via the Kalamazoo Growlers, a team in the Northwoods League, which is a summer league made up of college players. Via Deadspin comes word that the Growlers are hosting a Salute to Selfie Night. And what better way to pay tribute to self-photography than by taking the fruits of your narcissistic labor, and planting them smack dab on a baseball jersey.
Or as the Growlers themselves put it:
The team will collect selfies through April 1. Once the submission period ends, the Growlers will build a unique mosaic-style jersey assembled entirely from the selfies entered in the promotion.
Getting your mug on a Growler jersey is simply a matter of posting your selfie to the team’s Facebook page or following the Growlers on either Twitter or Instagram, and tagging your self-portrait with “kzoogrowlers” and the #SalutetoSelfie hashtag. The team promises that the fan “that exhibits the most ‘Growlers spirit’” will get a prominent location on the jerseys, which will be worn during a July 24 game between the Growlers and the hated Wisconsin Woodchucks. It's a contest that’s sure to be rife with both tense plays and poorly framed headshots.
There’s no word on how one shows “Growlers spirit.” Tastefully placed foam finger? Permanent face tattoo? Shooting your selfie while chugging a growler of locally produced craft beer? So you’re on your own there.
It is quite possible that we as a society have reached an inflection point for selfies. Oxford Dictionaries declares “selfie” the Word of the Year? We said nothing. Ellen DeGeneres brings the Oscars to a screeching halt for a selfie stunt? We shrugged and hit Retweet. But now that up-and-coming college players will take to the field in shirts festooned with people’s faces like so much TGIFriday’s flair—is this when we put down the smartphone camera and finally take a good hard look at ourselves? (Ideally in the mirror and not at a selfie.)
Probably not. So if you are going to enter the Kalamazoo Growlers’ selfie contest, do make sure you adhere to our tips for better selfies so that you at least look pleasant when you’re plastered next to a first baseman’s armpit.
