Spike VGA 2010 Nominees Continue to Embarrass Games Industry

Spike VGA Awards 2010

I've never watched a Spike Video Game Awards ceremony and never will, but I do notice who they nominate when the annual list hits my feed crawl. It's a chance to make fun of something that invites mockery, to snipe with scorn, to pretend I know better than they do.

Let the ceremonies begin!

I'll focus on the most ridiculous categories, and you can scan the rest here. Nominees are selected by a panel of gamers (including gossip blog minions) which in the past has included the host of the show. Make of that what you will.

Let's start with Best Xbox 360 Game:

Alan Wake
Fable III
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2

I know. See what I mean? What the heck is Alan Wake doing in that lineup? Or for that matter Fable III?

Where's Limbo? Super Meat Boy? (Relegating so-called "independent games" to a separate category is cheap, Spike.) Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood? BioShock 2?

Moving on to Best PC Game, we have:

Fallout: New Vegas
Mass Effect 2
Sid Meier's Civilization V
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

Bug-riddled games like Fallout: New Vegas and Civilization V somehow made the list, but not DiRT 2, Football Manager 2011, BioShock 2, Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising, or Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

[Insert haughty sigh here.]

And for Game of the Year:

Call of Duty: Black Ops
God of War III
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption

I won't quibble with God of War III, Mass Effect 2, or Red Dead Redemption. I'm not exactly enthusiastic about Halo: Reach, but I understand its inclusion.

But Black Ops? Really? That's just pandering to mass sales and ignoring the game's broadly negative consumer response. Besides, where's StarCraft II? Amnesia: The Dark Descent? Cave Story? Super Mario Galaxy 2? Plants vs. Zombies? Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood? With or without the consumer backlash, I'd submit any of those before Black Ops.

How about you?
