Fact Check: Motorola Droid 2’s Processor Upgrade Is Nothing More Than a Typo

Complete Coverage
Best current price: $0.01

When a holiday promotional e-mail from Verizon listed the Motorola Droid 2 as having a 1.2GHz processor, we were mystified. Among the listed specifications of the Motorola Droid 2 we reviewed was a 1GHz TI OMAP processor. But the Droid 2 Global has a 1.2GHz processor so was the Droid 2 getting some sort of upgrade? Or was it simply a mix-up by Verizon? When the Verizon Wireless Website listed both the Droid 2 and the Droid 2 Global side-by-side as having 1.2GHz processors, we decided to investigate.

Android blog Phandroid raised the possibility that Motorola had intentionally underclocked the Droid 2 until it could determine whether operating at full power compromised the device in any way, but the blog ultimately dismissed the whole thing as most likely a typo that would eventually get fixed. Several other blogs followed, however, speculating that Verizon would soon roll out an update to overclock the Droid 2's processor.

We contacted Motorola, and it turns out that the Verizon Web page was simply inaccurate. Only the Droid 2 Global has a 1.2GHz processor. It just goes to show you that you can't believe everything you read online.
