Amazon Shop buttons are programmatically attached to all reviews, regardless of products' final review scores. Our parent company, IDG, receives advertisement revenue for shopping activity generated by the links. Because the buttons are attached programmatically, they should not be interpreted as editorial endorsements.
I downloaded DriveCarefully to review, and then completely forgot about it. The next day I stopped by my local library, and while browsing through some books I suddenly heard a loud, robotic voice saying "Message from. . .Hey, want to meet up for lunch?" I nearly jumped out of my skin from surprise and embarrassment. I had set my phone to silent, and I could not think why my phone was reading aloud a text message that I had received. And then, before I had gotten over the annoyed looks of the other library patrons, I received another text message--at which point I turned off my phone.
DriveCarefully reads text messages and voicemail to you. The purpose is to enable you to receive messages while still focusing on the road as you drive. That's a commendable goal, but don't be surprised if the app starts running as soon as it downloads--even before you have a chance to accept the terms of agreement!
DriveCarefully works simply. You turn it on or off and have a couple of options that you can tweak from the settings. It does a pretty good job of reading texts--about what you'd expect from a voice navigation system, for example. Though I wish it wouldn't start up immediately upon downloading, I wholeheartedly endorse any app that encourages people not to mess around with their phones while they're driving. If that ends up preventing a couple of car crashes, I suppose I can live with having disturbed the quiet of the library.
