Death of Xserve 'Could Spell End for Professional Products'

The end of Xserve could be significant for other professional-oriented Apple products, according to a report.

The HardMac website speculates that the end of Xserve could also signal the end for networked storage system Xsan and Final Cut Server.

The report does stress that the speculation is based on unconfirmed rumours, albeit from what it considers to be reliable sources. It also goes on to suggest that the days of Mac OS X Server could be numbered as well.

Xserve is dead... so now what?

The official end of the Xserve product line will come on 31 January. After that date, customers looking to upgrade, replace, or supplement existing Xserve systems will be able to choose from the Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server and Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server as alternatives.

Apple has also published a transition guide to help those looking to replace their Xserve systems.
