Minecraft Documentary in the Works, Needs Your Help

The critically acclaimed indie game Minecraft is finally getting its due--in the form of a documentary. At least if the funding for it can get off the ground. 2 Player Productions, an indie documentary production company, is trying to get $150,000 through donations on Kickstarter to fund a year’s worth of filming and post-production.

Minecraft, for those who don’t know, is a game that provides the player with a completely open sandbox. You gather raw materials like wood and stone and can craft things out of them. (For a look at what people have done, just search “minecraft” on YouTube.)

2 Player Productions has released a 20-minute-long “proof-of-concept” video to show off footage they've already shot. If the project on Kickstarter gets fully funded, they’ll be able to spend the next year working on gettig enough footage to produce a full-length documentary about Minecraft and the people who work on it.

To sweeten the deal, anyone who becomes a backer on Kickstarter will receive certain rewards, depending on the amount of money they pledge. If you’ve got $100,000 sitting around, you could get your own executive producer credit, as well as a chance to spend a day with the folks who make Minecraft a reality. For those of us with slightly more meager budgets, a mere $30 will get you a special, two-DVD edition of the film, along with a digital download of the soundtrack.

If you want to help get this off the ground, visit the Kickstarter project page.

Blair Hanley Frank has a sneaking suspicion there’s a creeper right behind him.
