iPad 2: Smart Cover Sliced Open, Magnetic Powers Exposed

As we expected, it didn't take long for the iFixit folks to get their hands on Apple's latest iPad, tearing the second generation tablet apart to reveal all its internal glory. However, rather unexpectedly, the iFixit gang also tore apart one of Apple's new Smart Covers.

iFixit found that the magnetic magic of the highly functional Smart Cover is all made possible thanks to the 21 two-pole magnets found within. These internal magnets snap to the ten magnets found within the iPad 2 itself, making a total of 31 magnets all clicking together in harmony.

They also discovered that just one of the Smart Cover's many magnets is used to wake/sleep the device, but according to iFixit, other magnetized tools can also do the on/off job (pictured below).

The folks at iFixit are known for offering solid advice on repairing your various tech goods, but be warned: A sliced Smart Cover has a humorous repairability score of zero.

More information on the 'teardown', including more pictures, can be found on the iFixit site.
