Sony's Android Tablets: A Look at the Newest iPad Competitors

The Sony Tablet S1 and S2 will arrive this fall and run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb. They feature a dual-core processor will be able to play first-generation PlayStation titles.

Sony’s iPad Competitors

Sony is betting its future in the tablet market with two new Android tablets set to arrive this fall. The Sony Tablet S1 (left) and S2 (right) will run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, but pricing is yet to be announced.

Sony Tablet S1

The Sony Tablet S1 has a 9.4-inch display and runs on an Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor.

The S1 is wedge-shaped, much like a folded magazine, and also features an infrared sensor, which lets you control other devices in the house, such as (Sony Bravia) TVs or Blu-ray players.

The S1 tablet features dual cameras for recording video and taking snapshots, as well as making and receiving video calls.

Sony used a customized user interface for its tablets on top of Android 3.0. Users will be able to play first-generation PlayStation titles, music and video from the Sony Qriocity service and buy and read books from Sony's Reader Store.

The S1 will have Wi-Fi and 3G/4G capabilities when it arrives this fall, as well as DLNA functionality for media streaming.

The Sony Tablet S2 has a folding clamshell design with two 5.5-inch displays with 1024-by-480-pixel resolution, also running on a Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

The S2 has a custom book-style user interface that takes advantage of the two screens on board for reading or sending e-mails (imagine the message window on top and the keyboard on the lower screen).

The dual screens on the S2 can be used for gaming, too (the tablet is PlayStation certified like the S1), with the top screen used for the gameplay and the bottom one for on-screen controls to manipulate the game.

The S2 is small enough to fit inside a jacket pocket when folded, despite its bulky appearance.

The Sony Tablet S2 only has a camera on the back to capture video and stills, and will also have Wi-Fi and 3G/4G options. Sony did not disclose which carriers it plans to work with for the launch of the S1 and S2 tablets.
