Roku to Bring Angry Birds to TVs

Soon there won't be anywhere to hide from the pig-killing phenomenon that is Angry Birds. Roku, which makes Netflix and Hulu-streaming set-top boxes, announced that it would add support for casual games this summer, starting with three versions of the uber-popular Angry Birds.

Rovio, the makers of Angry Birds, partnered with Roku to sell Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio through the company's set-top boxes. The Roku boxes will also get an Angry Birds video channel, where you can quench your Angry Birds addiction with animated shorts featuring the characters in the game, as well as buy merchandise.

Roku to Bring Angry Birds to TVsBefore you get too excited about Angry Birds in HD glory on your big-screen TV, there are a few details to be ironed out. Rovio and Roku did not say when the games would be available, with details, including pricing, expected "within the next few weeks."

There's also another big unknown, as All Things D's Peter Kafka points out: How are you going to play the game? The Roku box only comes with a small remote control, and playing Angry Birds on the TV would require more complex controls than just a remote -- which indicates that some sort of additional controller could be in store.

With more than 200 million downloads under its belt, it seems there's no stopping Angry Birds. In case you haven't played the game on iOS and Android devices, you can also get it on Palm and Nokia smartphones, too. Also, if you prefer, you can play Angry Birds in Chrome, and say goodbye to any possible trace of productivity.
