Great performance, good components, and a $163 price reduction help secure the Gateway E-3110 300's place in the Best Buy ranks for a second straight month. Powered by a Pentium II-300 processor, this corporate midtower cranked out a PC WorldBench 98 score of 172--very peppy for its CPU class, and the second-highest among our Best Buys. In addition, the E-3110 comes with perks such as an SMC EtherPower II 10/100 network interface card to support easy high-speed network connection, plus DMI-2 client management software that lets LAN administrators track changes and upgrade the system remotely.
At $2585, the E-3110 300 comes well configured, from its 8.4GB hard drive to the roomy 19-inch Gateway EV900 monitor. Gateway also sweetens the box with tidbits that many corporate systems lack, such as an Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card and reasonably good-sounding Altec Lansing ACS41 speakers. Like most other PCs sold specifically for hookup to a LAN, the E-3110 does not come with a modem.
Color-coded cables and ports make attaching peripherals easy. The cover is a breeze to remove too: Just twist off the two large screws with your fingers, and you can slide back the side panel to reveal the orderly interior. Gateway's support policies are terrific, including a three-year parts and labor warranty and toll-free technical support around the clock.
