Gateway G6-266b

Gateway G6-266b

The Gateway G6-266b tops our budget Best Buys again this month. At $1879, the G6-266b is a good PC for business use, with top-tier components and solid performance.

This Pentium II-266 midtower is outfitted fairly well. It comes with a 56-kbps modem, and its STB Velocity 128 3D video card is a decent AGP board. The included Ensoniq Audio PCI wavetable card and Boston Acoustic satellite speakers with subwoofer provide good-quality sound.

Nifty design touches enhance this PC. The sides and top of the light-gray case curve subtly outward. This is a nice contrast to the typical desktop cityscape of square, putty-colored boxes, but the arched top means you can't place disks or external peripherals there. We found the case simple to open, thanks to the side-panel grip at the back. Inside, Gateway leaves lots of room for expansion, with a neat interior and plenty of available slots, memory sockets, and drive bays.

Gateway's documentation is laudable. The well-organized manual offers concise, informative help and useful color illustrations. The company's support policies include a three-year warranty on parts and labor and 24-hour toll-free tech support.

SUMMARY

PRO: High-quality components, top support
CON: Curved top of midtower case makes it hard to stack peripherals
