"FeedDemon for free" isn't just a fun tongue twister--it's music to the ears of RSS fans. FeedDemon, a longtime favorite RSS reader, no longer costs a red cent. If you never tried this formerly for-charge software, now's a good time to check out this impeccably organized news feed reader.

The dual-pane tabbed interface lets you dive right in to navigating your feeds and reading news items. FeedDemon to brings you the news you request in the form of RSS (short for Really Simple Syndication) feeds. It can stock your reading bin with a default selection of feeds from all over the world, ranging from fluffy entertainment (BuzzSugar) to serious news (BBC News, New York Times). You can subscribe or unsubscribe to any feed at will, and you can add your own categories to FeedDemon's.

FeedDemon is easy to customize. In addition to tweaking the feeds, you can have FeedDemon's Watches keep an eye out for feeds that may interest you, and you can save news items in Clippings folders. You can also have FeedDemon prefetch the feeds so you can read them offline instead of using the RSS headlines as links to Web sites. The bundled FeedStation utility downloads podcasts.

It's easy to overfill your plate with the smorgasbord of RSS feeds out there, so you may find yourself using one nifty feature: the Panic Button, which deletes all news older than a certain number of hours or days.
