If you know what a Regular Expression is, you can use one of those, or you can simply type out a string. There are many options, such as "insert 3 spaces from end", or change the code page, or change the text case. You create each change separately and add it to a list; when you execute, each step in the list is performed in order. The file window shows a preview of what the name will look like.

I tried to 'fool' the program by setting up a sequence which would give two files the same name; it quite properly stopped after the first file.

The only real issue I see with Ken Rename is that it works only on files in a single directory at a time. I could not find a way to get it to traverse nested directories or allow selections across multiple directories. Granted, this is a feature which is rarely needed.

Ken Rename is easy to use, does what it's supposed to, and is under active development. If you need it, it's worth trying out.
