Intergraph Intense 3D Voodoo

One look at the configuration of the $200 Intergraph Intense 3D Voodoo confirms that this is a board for gamers. Instead of a combination 2D/3D chip, the Intense 3D contains two separate chips--the Alliance Promotion for 2D and the 3Dfx Voodoo Rush for 3D.

Unfortunately, the Alliance Promotion chip doesn't deliver top-shelf 2D performance--it supports only EDO DRAM, the slowest kind--but you can't get a better 3D chip on a combination board than the Voodoo Rush.

Not surprisingly, in our mixed-media business tests, the Intense 3D performed unimpressively, though it did supply smooth AVI video playback. But this board produces beautiful 3D image quality. Our judges rated it as excellent in Quake II and Redline Racer and good in Flight Unlimited II. The board fell short in Turok only because cliffs and rocks appear suddenly as you move through the fog instead of coming into view gradually.

The Intense 3D offers one particularly nice bonus: You can use your TV as a big-screen monitor--especially handy if you like larger-than-life games. Also, you get some free games, to take advantage of Intense 3D's outstanding game play.

Intergraph provides support for 12 hours each weekday, and on weekends, though you have to pay for the call.
