Number Nine Revolution 3D AGP

Number Nine Revolution 3D AGP

Like its PCI-based twin, the $169 Number Nine Revolution 3D AGP is extremely strong in mixed-media business performance. In our tests, it was 12 percent faster than competing AGP cards. It's also one of the few cards that uses hardware to run 3D at 24-bit color. Our PowerPoint test includes a few 3D images, and most boards had to bump these out to software when we forced them to run in true color--which slows them down considerably. But Revolution 3D ran those images in hardware, excelling on the test.

Still, the card is not at all competitive when it comes to 3D gaming performance. Like its sibling, it couldn't even run Turok and couldn't use hardware-acceleration features when running Quake II, so images were blocky. This is not the board to buy if you're a gamer--not even if you're a one-hour-a-week game player.

This Revolution 3D board comes with the same quality drivers that are included with the PCI version. They're easy to navigate and include every imaginable feature, from virtual desktop to color calibration. The company should probably turn a little more attention to its support policies: Support is not toll-free and there's no help available on weekends.

Bottom line: As with the PCI version of this card, invest in the Revolution 3D AGP board only if you want top-shelf business performance and utilities, and don't play games.
