Here's another piece of software that like Hotspot Shield, sets up a virtual private network (VPN) for you when you're at a hot spot, or want to protect your wireless transmissions for any reason. Run the software, log in, choose a server (currently your choice is only the U.S. or the U.K.) and everything you do will be encrypted, using 128-bit SSL encryption.

The software also claims to get around a problem that can occur when people are outside the U.S. and want to view certain American TV shows over the Internet. It claims that some sites block access to those shows to all but American IP addresses. So if you choose a U.S. WiFi Guardian server when you log in, you will be given a U.S. IP address by it, and you can watch the show.
