Windows on one virtual desktop will only show up on that desktop (or that desktop's task bar if you minimize the window), and you can quickly switch back and forth between desktops using hotkeys or the program's system tray icon.

Actual Virtual Desktops adds a button to the upper-right of a window that, when clicked, allows you to send that window to a different desktop. You can also choose to have that window display on every desktop, or go into the program configuration and create rules to automatically put certain windows on certain desktops when the window first starts up.

You'll start with two virtual desktops, and can easily create more in the program's configuration. You can also rename the desktops to things like "Web apps" or "Documents" to help you organize.

The program warns that in order to enable virtual desktop support for command windows (where you work with a DOS prompt), it has to make system changes that some security programs might misconstrue as malicious. It's worth noting that We scanned the Actual Virtual Desktops download hosted here and didn't find anything suspicious.

If you don't have multiple monitors and tend to have many different windows open at any given time, virtual desktop programs like Actual Virtual Desktop can be a big help in organizing your desktop.
