Transformers Producer Secures Rights to Space Invaders Movie

You might not know the names of producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Gigi Pritzker, but chances are you know the cinematographic monstrosities they've inflicted on the world: the three Transformers movies in di Bonaventura's case, and The Wedding Planner in Pritzker's. Now it seems that the pair are on the hunt for a writer to come up with a story for a Space Invaders movie, according to the Hollywood Reporter. And presumably they're after something a bit more than "these white bug-like things appear and very slowly descend to Earth while a guy in a tank shoots them."

This isn't the first early game that di Bonaventura has turned his gaze upon -- he's also reported to be working on the Asteroids movie. Pritzker, meanwhile, is a producer on the movie adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game.

Video game movies are historically terrible for the most part -- even those that draw upon established mythology and lore. In some ways, basing a movie on a game with no backstory might be a brilliant idea, as it will make it very difficult to upset those who are invested in the game universe and its characters -- because there aren't any. If that's the case, though, why call it Space Invaders at all?

On the other hand, it can't be much worse than Space Raiders (aka Space Invaders: Invasion Day), Taito's 2002 attempt to give Space Invaders a plot and drag it screaming into the 21st century.
