Toshiba Acknowledges Tablet Bug, Working on Fix
Toshiba on Wednesday acknowledged a bug that causes its Thrive tablet to not wake up from sleep mode, and the company said it is working on a fix.
The Thrive tablet, has a 10.1-inch screen and uses Google's Android 3.0 operating system, went on sale last month starting at US$429. Buyers have picked up on the sleep-mode issue, which has ignited a discussion in Toshiba's forums. Some customers said the devices become operational only after a reboot.
"We're aware of the issue and are working on a fix," a Toshiba spokesman said in an e-mail. He could not say when the software fix would be released, but it would be delivered through Toshiba's Service Station application that is loaded on the Thrive.
This is not the first setback as Toshiba attempts to break into the burgeoning tablet market. Toshiba's first tablet, the Folio 100, was discontinued after U.K.-based consumer electronics vendor Dixon's Retail stopped offering the device because of high return rates. The Folio also included a 10.1-inch screen and ran on Android's 2.2 OS.
The Thrive has unique features such as a replaceable battery and has received mostly positive reviews. However, some users in the forums said they were contemplating returning the tablet due to the issue.
