According to number-crunching carried out by Business Insider the iPad now represents 11 percent of the PC market, up from 7 percent in January of this year.
Business Insider's calculations are based on figures released this week by Apple and figures released earlier this month by analyst firm IDC about the state of the global PC market. IDC's figures put PC sales (not including tablets) at 84.4 million for the last quarter.
Based on the assumption that most iPads are sold to consumers and that overall PC sales are roughly split half-and-half between business and consumers, Business Insider said that the iPad has already sucked up about 20 percent of the consumer PC market.
The iPad alone would make Apple the fourth largest computer brand in the world after HP, Dell, and Lenovo and ahead of Acer, the report suggests. When Mac sales are considered, Apple becomes the second-largest computer brand in the world.
The report concludes that Microsoft's domination of the PC market is no longer secure.
Looking to the future, the iPad could pose even more of a danger to Microsoft's PC market share. iOS 5, to be released in the autumn of this year, will allow you to set up an iPad without using a computer. While until now iPads have been a secondary device, requiring the owner to also have a Mac or Windows based PC, iOS 5 will give customers the potential to own just an iPad.
