Dell Inspiron 7000 D300GT

Dell Inspiron 7000 D300GT

Powered by Intel's latest notebook processor, the Pentium II-300, Dell's Inspiron 7000 D300GT is our new speed king by an eyelash, chalking up an outstanding PC WorldBench 98 score of 162.

In addition to its speed, this $3599 laptop's multimedia features and weight classify it as a desktop alternative. At 9.7 pounds, and 12.5 inches wide by 10 inches deep by 2.5 inches thick, the bulky Inspiron should spend most of its life on your desk.

Size has its benefits, however. The 7000's body and big screen panel are solid as a rock. The full-size keyboard is a pleasure to type on. Also, components usually relegated to PC Card slots, such as the modem and MPEG-2/DVD decoder board, are built in.

Dell just bumped its labor warranty on this notebook up to three years, a welcome improvement in support. Our only complaint: Movies didn't look as sharp on the 7000's DVD-ROM drive as they have on those of other notebooks we've seen.

SUMMARY

PRO: Record-setting speed, large screen, only portable here with a DVD-ROM drive
CON: Weighs a ton, DVD quality could be better
