Micron GoBook 2 266

Micron GoBook 2 266

On this month's power chart, the Micron GoBook 2 266 replaces its slower Pentium MMX sibling, the GoBook 266. Micron has increased the hard drive size to 3GB and upgraded the RAM to 64MB while maintaining the rare combination of outstanding battery life and very good Pentium II-266 performance.

The GoBook 2's two-layer design is both a joy and a burden. The ultralight main unit and bottom-mounted battery layer function together to provide exceptional 5.7-hour battery life, the highest score we've seen for a Pentium II notebook. Unfortunately, in this configuration the system weighs 8.3 pounds.

The GoBook 2 also comes with a smaller battery that fits into the modular bay. Using it reduces the weight of the notebook to 6.5 pounds, but battery life is brief (the vendor estimates 1 hour) and you can't use the smaller battery while running the CD-ROM drive. (Micron has announced a new bottom-mounted battery one-fourth the size of the full layer. This $199 option weighs less than the full-size battery and leaves the modular bay free for your CD-ROM drive.)

Micron covers parts and labor on most components for only one year, but extends parts coverage to five years for the CPU and main memory. We were unimpressed by the around-the-clock, toll-free technical support: Twice, we waited for nearly 30 minutes before reaching a rep.

SUMMARY

PRO: Flexible design, long-lasting battery
CON: Heavy with big battery attached
