Apache NetExpress 56-Kbps Internal Telephony Fax Modem

Apache NetExpress 56-Kbps Internal Telephony Fax Modem

Apache's latest is one of the first modems we've tested that comes on a PCI adapter. This is an advantage, even a necessity, for late-model PCs, which offer more PCI slots and fewer ISA slots. Apache's newest is also inexpensive for a full-featured modem. But there's a trade-off. Apache helped keep the cost down by leaving the controller chip off the modem, but it foists the controller's tasks onto the PC's processor. As a result, you should have a 133-MHz or faster Pentium PC, an important fact Apache failed to include on the box and in the manuals (but which the company confirmed with PC World). This limitation, plus hard-to-read documentation, kept the NetExpress off the chart.

CON: Techie manuals, modem could bog down slower Pentium PCs
