Canon BJC-4400

Canon's BJC-4400 isn't as flashy and doesn't print as nicely as the company's BJC-5000, but it prints at similar speeds and has some of the same useful features--for $70 less. One of the 4400's unique features is an oversize black cartridge, which prints long text documents about twice as fast as the typical set of ink cartridges and reduces the chances of running dry in the middle of a job, much like the 5000's mix-and-match cartridge scheme. And as with the 5000, you can transform the 4400 into a scanner by pulling out the printhead and snapping in Canon's $99 IS-22 scanhead.

Home users who are pressed for space will appreciate the Canon BJC-4400's size, which is more compact than the BJC-5000's. Too bad about the 4400's print quality. The printer is perfectly fine for personal letters, but you wouldn't want to print your résumé on it. Normal-size text has rough edges, and larger fonts are distorted. Although graphics look somewhat better, revealing good detail, their colors lack subtlety.
