Axis Systems Terra MK8

Thanks to its low-cost AMD K6-2-350 processor, the MK8 offers a lot of features for a $1384 system. Along with Celeron-level performance, it provides a DVD-ROM drive, a Zip drive, an 8GB hard drive, and a 17-inch monitor. Not a bad deal.

Add the crisp, clear sound of the ACS45 speakers with subwoofer, and a software bundle that includes Microsoft Home Essentials 98, Encarta 98, and Lotus WordPro 97 and 1-2-3 97, and you've got a solid, all-purpose system for most computing tasks.

The downside? Axis is a lesser-known manufacturer for which we have no reliability and service data. The monitor looked a little fuzzy when displaying small text, and the system's expandability options are limited: There's only one free PCI expansion slot and one free drive bay.

SUMMARY

PRO: Good price, nice extras like DVD-ROM and Zip drives.
CON: Limited expandability.
