Lenovo's New Portable Monitor Powered by USB

Lenovo this week announced a 14-inch mobile monitor that works by plugging it into a laptop's USB port.

The slim ThinkVision LT1421 monitor does not require a separate power adapter and has attributes similar to a digital photo frame. The monitor is easy to carry, weighing under two pounds (0.9 kilograms) and measuring less than a centimeter (0.39 inches) thick.

The monitor receives the display signal through the USB port and offers 16 levels of brightness. The monitor is good for extra screen space, or can be an additional display for meetings in public places like lobbies or cafes, Lenovo said. Extra screens are sometimes used so multiple applications can be displayed in full windows simultaneously, or to display presentations if there is no projector.

A kickout stand is included so the monitor can placed on a surface. The monitor is priced at US$219.95, and will become available later this month. Lenovo did not immediately provide further information about the monitor.

The monitor was announced alongside the ThinkPad Edge E425 and E525 laptops, which come with 14-inch and 15.6-inch displays, respectively. The laptops have options of Intel's Core or Advanced Micro Devices' A-series chips, up to 750GB of hard drive storage and up to 8GB of memory. The laptops start at $549 and will become available later this month.
