Packard Bell Platinum 7800

Packard Bell Platinum 7800

Packard Bell's Platinum 7800 starts off strong and then disappoints: Novices and first-time buyers will have little trouble reading the clearly written instruction sheet and connecting the color-coded cables. And when you're up and running, the Platinum 7800 has a useful online tutorial, loads of online help, and Navigator Assistant, Packard Bell's custom Windows interface that will ease any initiate's introduction to Windows.

But the system's Pentium II-350 CPU and 64MB of RAM produced a PC WorldBench score that was more representative of an average Pentium II-333 system; graphics and multimedia test scores were also unimpressive. Still, the $1278 price is fair considering you get a 17-inch monitor and Microsoft Word 97, Encarta 98, and a few other titles. But remember that Packard Bell's service and support was rated poor in PC World's latest Reliability and Service report.

SUMMARY
