Christened the Maxback, this massive sensor was commissioned by professional photographer Mitchell Feinberg as a replacement for his quickly dwindling supply of 8 by 10-inch polaroid film.
Feinberg’s began his mission for a color capture back large enough to cover 8 by 10-inch format some time in 2009. He spent the first few months researching the technical papers and manufacturers that actually had the expertise to do it. Eventually Feinberg convinced one firm that delivered the first prototype in February 2010 and a production model that came nine months later.
Sure, the Maxback is massive in a physical sense compared to to other digital camera sensors, but it only shoots 10-megapixel photos. Supposedly the sensor costs somewhere in the "low six figures," and Feinberg probably paid that amount twice for the sensor and a backup.
The digital back attaches to an unmodified Sinar camera, where the glass plate would typically go for these bellowed cameras. For the final product, Feinberg actually takes off the sensor once he’s lined up a shot he likes and slips on a sheet of film.
