Kyocera FS-1700+
Kyocera FS-1700+
|
Why would Kyocera tag this model at more than $1000? The printer lopes along at 9.8 ppm when printing text files, just a pace or two ahead of competitors that cost one-half or one-third as much. The model's inexpensive toner and long-lasting components should hold down its total cost over the long haul, but that doesn't justify the high purchase price.
Other than delivering less bang for the buck, the FS-1700+ is mostly identical to its sibling, the corporate-targeted FS-3700+, which also failed to make our Top 10 chart. But the printers diverge in a couple of important ways. Surprisingly, the FS-1700+ provides somewhat better print quality. Black text looks solid with smooth edges, and narrow lines also print exceptionally clearly. And the FS-1700+ doesn't include an output tray ($28.50) for the straight paper path, so printing labels and other iffy media requires some additional care.
