This next-generation board is by far the fastest on our AGP chart. At $180, the 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 is aimed at the ultimate gamer, and its raw speed is something to behold. After running it through our battery of tests, we judged it the fastest 3D performer we've seen. By way of perspective, the Voodoo3 3000's Quake II frame rate of 79 frames per second is 23 percent faster than that of the Diamond Multimedia Stealth III S540, the next-fastest model on our AGP chart. The high-ticket Voodoo3 3000 also comes with a hefty bundle of extras, which helps to justify its high price.

But the drivers 3dfx sent us with our test board had some kinks that need to be ironed out. Display quality was uneven. For example, in Quake II, the Voodoo3 3000 displayed transparency effects beautifully, but lighting effects were somewhat dark and colors looked faded. As a result, the board earned an overall 3D rating of only good.
