NEC PowerMate VT 300

NEC PowerMate VT 300

WHAT'S HOT: The PIII-550 version of the PowerMate VT 300 provides great performance for about $300 less than the Micron Millennia 550. Excellent documentation provides an in-depth troubleshooting section and plenty of diagrams. The tower features a front-mounted USB port, and the 17-inch NEC Vista Scan 7000 monitor offers USB controls as well as a USB hub built into its base. The monitor produces clear text and graphics at up to 1280-by-1024 resolution.

WHAT'S NOT: Unfortunately, the monitor must be plugged into a USB port on the PC, so it doesn't add any ports. The interior of the system feels cramped, with little room for expansion.

WHAT ELSE: Expandability, limited to two free drive bays and one open PCI slot, which may present a problem down the road. The PowerMate VT 300 also includes a V.90 PCI modem.

BEST USE: An excellent office system for the power-hungry and multimedia-savvy.
