eMachines eTower 400I

eMachines eTower 400I

WHAT'S HOT: At $638, you won't find a less expensive system without doing some serious searching. The minitower features an easy-access, front-mounted gameport and USB connection--a nice touch that other manufacturers should consider.

WHAT'S NOT: A barrel-bottom PC WorldBenchscore of 169 ranks the eTower as one point shy of the slowest we've tested-about 10 percent slower than the average Celeron 400-based system. The 15-inch eMachines eView 15S monitor displays blurry text at its maximum resolution, 1024 by 768. Upgrading to a 17-inch eView will cost you $70 more, and at least offers hope for people who work at the screen all day. To remove the one-piece cover, you have to extract five screws.

WHAT ELSE: As with other eMachines systems, multimedia aspects suffer. The system features integrated sound and video, and tiny low-grade speakers--and there's little expansion room to add on better cards later.

BEST USE: A good starter PC or second system for extremely budget conscious buyers.
