The lithium-ion battery in your smartphone needs to only last three years. But the battery powering an electric car needs to keep things running for a decade or more.
That’s the challenge Farasis Energy is taking on. The Hayward, Calif.-based startup makes lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles, as you’ll see in this video report from IDG News Service.
Right now, Farasis primarily focuses on lithium-ion batteries for smaller electric vehicles, like motorcycles and scooters, but it expects to build scale and supply large automakers in three to five years. “As you get more out there, people are going to realize that these are high performing or can be high performing vehicles,” says Keith Kepler, Farasis’s co-founder and chief technology officer.
Farasis has developed a stabilized lithium ion cathode material that’s manganese rich, enabling the company to make long life batteries with a higher energy density. Farasis says its manganese-based batteries are cheaper and safer because they don’t have high amounts of nickel and cobalt typically found in lithium-ion cathode materials.
