Foursquare has been teasing its rebirth for months, and now it seems the end (or is that the beginning?) is near. As of Thursday, you’ll no longer be able to check into a location on Foursquare. The service will push you to its dedicated check-in app Swarm from now on.
We knew this was coming. Foursquare has been pushing its 50 million users to install and use Swarm since the app debuted in May. The company said Wednesday that 75 percent of you have installed Swarm—probably because when you tried to check in on Foursquare after Swarm launched, you were prompted to download the new app.
But now it’s official. Foursquare has banished check-ins as it ramps up to relaunch in early August. The company is pivoting its focus to recommendations in an attempt to become a hyperlocal, mobile-first Yelp competitor. A new purpose requires a new logo, Foursquare said Wednesday, designed to be “a mix of map pin and superhero emblem.” At least it’s not a vaguely NSFW symbol a la Airbnb.
Foursquare also teased its redesign, which is far more aesthetically pleasing than its current incarnation. The new image-heavy focus and blue-and-pink motif are a far cry from the all text, all the time look with bright blue and green elements that Foursquare has relied on since its launch.
But until Foursquare officially rolls out its new app, you’ll have to rely on Swarm (or give up on the service altogether). The company knows that its dedicated users have been incredibly displeased with its removal of check-ins and games from the main app, so Foursquare has been working to make Swarm a more fun place. That means more sticker packs (!!!), tips displayed upon check-in, different mayorship categories, and superuser editing capabilities. It looks like Foursquare is sticking to its guns when it comes to mayorships—you can’t compete to best all other Foursquare users anymore, but you can beat your friends. (Somehow, that’s less satisfying.)
