Foodmento takes on Foursquare for your restaurant recs

Foodmento is a new iOS app that wants to be the Foursquare for food. “But wait,” you’re thinking, “isn’t Foursquare already the Foursquare of food?” Well, yes. But Foodmento doesn’t care about ambiance or occasion. Foursquare will tell you if a restaurant is good for dates, but this app is all about what to order.

Foodmento takes our constant amateur food photography and gives it purpose. Instead of Instagramming your latte art just for the fun of it, now you can keep track of dishes you’ve eaten at which restaurants and whether you’d eat them again. You don’t have to use your own photos if you don’t remember to get the perfect shot—Foodmento baked in Google and Instagram integration so you can easily search for images of a meal you tried.

Foodmento lets you find dishes by price, type of cuisine, and proximity.

Like Foursquare, Foodmento finds restaurants around you and offers you information about the menu and prices. Others who have eaten there before you leave their own photos and tips about specific dishes. You can pick a dish someone else has added and mark that you’ve had it, too—or save it for later, so you’ll remember it.

Foodmento founder Jeffrey Woo became a foodie when he moved to New York in 2005 and can’t imagine not keeping track of his top restaurants. Woo says he’s a huge fan of Foursquare, but for some, Yelp and Foursquare require too much effort to keep a running log. Foodmento’s photos are visual shorthand for Yelp’s long-form reviews and Foursquare’s short tips. For Woo, it’s all about “helping you become a better food fanatic.”

But he has grander ambitions than food photos. Foodmento will soon integrate with Seamless and OpenTable to make the app more than a visual log. Woo envisions Foodmento replacing restaurant menus.

“I want Foodmento to be the app you use to find a dish that you want,” Woo said. “If you are craving something spicy, you can search for spicy. You can click on the image and if that’s the place you want to go to, I want to make it very easy for you to make a reservation or order [that dish].”

Given how popular food photos have become on every social network, Foodmento’s appeal is pretty obvious. Whether it can appeal to foodies more than Foursquare is another issue, though Foursquare’s recent reboot puts both apps at square one.

Foodmento has been in beta for the last nine months, building a database of some 15,000 dishes in 3,500 restaurants around the world. The most popular cities, as you would expect, are New York, L.A., and San Francisco.
