WinBook XL2 Celeron
WinBook XL2 Celeron
WHAT'S HOT: The performance you get for the price. The $2098 WinBook XL approaches the speed of some of the PII-400s we've tested and even surpasses one, Compaq's $2650 Prosignia 165.
WHAT'S NOT: The lack of weekend support and the upgrade process. Before you can wrestle the 6.4GB hard drive out of the front of the notebook, you have to remove the cover to the modem and heat-sink housing, then extract several more tiny, easy-to-lose screws located inside the compartment. To reach the memory modules underneath the keyboard, we had to pry the stubborn end caps off the screen hinges with a screwdriver.
WHAT ELSE: Other than cheap speed, the WinBook XL's best feature is its multimedia readiness. It comes standard with two TV-out ports (including an S-video jack for watching DVD-ROM movies on a TV) and an extra audio line in. Audio quality is only so-so, however. The 4X DVD-ROM drive can be removed from its bay, but WinBook doesn't offer any other devices to swap in, such as a second battery. Fortunately, one battery lasts a decent 2.8 hours on one charge. A sizeable 14.1-inch screen rounds out the features.
BEST USE: A poor reliability ranking from PC World readers kept this heavy 8-pound notebook off our chart; otherwise, we'd recommend it as a reasonable choice for businesses on a budget.
