WHAT'S HOT: By far the fastest board on our AGP chart, the 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 targets the ultimate gamer, and its raw speed is something to behold. In our battery of tests, the Voodoo3 3000 emerged as the fastest 3D performer yet. This board also comes with a hefty bundle of extras. The Voodoo3 3000's 3D-game bundle includes GT Interactive's Need for Speed 3 and Unreal, and a video-out port lets you display games on a TV. In addition, 3dfx provides an unbeatable lifetime warranty. A $30 price drop to a more reasonable $150 helps move the Voodoo3 3000 up on our chart.
WHAT'S NOT: The drivers 3dfx sent us with our test board introduced some unfortunate quirks, including uneven image quality. During Quake II tests, the board displayed transparency effects beautifully, but dark lighting effects and faded colors hurt its overall 3D rating.
WHAT ELSE: Unlike most vendors, 3dfx offers a toll-free tech support line, available 12 hours a weekday and 8 hours on Saturday.
BEST USE: If you want ultimate-performance bragging rights--and don't mind some nagging questions about driver quality--this is your board. Revised drivers may correct the display glitches; we'll be retesting the board in the months to come.
