WHAT'S HOT: The speedy Visioneer OneTouch 8600 is one of the fastest 600 by 1200 resolution scanners we've tested. Only this month's Best Buy--the Universal Serial Bus version of Epson's Perfection 636--was faster on black and white scans. The OneTouch 8600 comes with USB and parallel interfaces and seven push-buttons that make scanning, copying, printing, faxing, and optical character recognition work quick and easy.
WHAT'S NOT: Although the $299 OneTouch 8600 produces good overall image quality, colors appear washed out.
WHAT ELSE: Future add-on options should make this scanner more versatile: Visioneer plans to offer a $149 automatic document feeder capable of holding up to 50 legal-size sheets, and an optional, $100 transparency adapter in February 2000.
BEST USE: The OneTouch 8600 will serve SOHO and home users well. The scanner's versatile dual interface makes it a good choice for those still using older PCs that don't have USB ports, yet it will survive the upgrade to PCs that do.
