Umax Astra 2200

Umax Astra 2200

WHAT'S HOT: The Astra 2200 produces fine images with strong, well-saturated colors from both reflective materials and transparencies (up to 4 by 5 inches). Three one-touch buttons offer easy shortcuts for scanning, copying, OCR, and other tasks. Bundled software for Web-based businesses--including Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE; full versions of Macromedia Fireworks 2.0 and NetObjects Fusion 4.0 ($190 and $300, respectively, as stand-alone products); and an excellent TWAIN driver (with beginner and advanced modes)--is icing on the cake.

WHAT'S NOT: This scanner doesn't handle legal-size documents, and no automatic document feeder is available.

WHAT ELSE: The 2200 includes a versatile interface that can connect it to your PC via USB or SCSI. The package doesn't include a SCSI card (a $40 option), which is not unusual among dual-interface scanners. Live tech support isn't toll-free, and in the future Umax may implement a pay-per-call support service (customers would have to pay for support after 90 days).

BEST USE: Bargain-minded SOHO or corporate users who want to set up shop on the Web can't go wrong with the Astra 2200. The Web-worthy software bundle alone makes it worth the price.
