Leadtek WinFast GeForce 256 DDR

Leadtek WinFast GeForce 256 DDR

WHAT'S HOT: Leadtek's relatively affordable WinFast GeForce 256 DDR exhibited nice frame rates in all of our test games: In Quake III, the WinFast was slower than the top three GeForce 256 DDR boards, but it matched or exceeded the speeds of those boards in Unreal Tournament and Viper Racing. In Quake III, the WinFast produced excellent lighting effects with nice highlights on the guns, although the sky contrasted a bit. Like the Hercules 3D Prophet, the WinFast offers DVD hardware acceleration, which should give you better video playback on monitors or TVs.

WHAT'S NOT: No games are bundled with the board. In Unreal Tournament, reflections were a little flat and some textures appeared fuzzy. Leadtek's stated one-year warranty is the shortest of any vendor's on the chart.

WHAT ELSE: Though it lacks games, the WinFast ships with a nice software bundle, including a software DVD player, E-Color's 3Deep and Colorific, Web and video producers, and other utilities. Leadtek offers tech support for 9.5 hours each weekday (you pay any toll charges).

BEST USE: If you want to have the latest DDR-memory GeForce card, but want to save some cash--and don't mind the shorter warranty--the WinFast is worthy of consideration.
