Plextor PlexWriter 12/4/32 SCSI

Plextor PlexWriter 12/4/32 SCSI

SUMMARY

WHAT'S HOT: For writing to CD-Rs, the PlexWriter 12/4/32 SCSI is a speed demon. It wrote a 430MB image file in only 5 minutes, and it took a mere 5 minutes, 45 seconds to write the same amount of data on the fly. If you frequently burn CD-R discs, the time savings alone is worth the drive's premium $350 price. Plextor bundles Adaptec's older (but faster and more stable) Easy CD Creator 3.5, as well as Adaptec's DirectCD 2.5 for packet writing. The company's AudioFS driver allows you to extract digital audio transparently via the standard Windows interface. Thorough and concise documentation easily guides you through installing the drive and using Plextor's Manager software.

WHAT'S NOT: The 12/4/32 didn't fare quite as well in our rewrite tests. Write times were acceptable, but overwrites with DirectCD 2.5 took more than twice as long as the original write operations. However, when we tested the drive with Prassi's abCD (not included with the product), overwrite times were only a few seconds longer than the original copy operations.

WHAT ELSE: Plextor offers a one-year warranty, and toll-free tech support for 11 hours on weekdays.

BEST USE: The 12/4/32 is currently the drive for power users who write lots of CD-Rs.

SCSI, internal, 12X/4X/32X, 4MB buffer, CD-mastering and packet-writing software, Windows DAE drivers, one-year warranty, toll-free support for 11 hours on weekdays.
