Elsa Erazor X

Elsa Erazor X

WHAT'S HOT: The soon-to-be-extinct Erazor X doesn't use Double Data Rate memory, but the board's speedy performance (89 frames per second with Quake III in 16-bit mode) and aesthetically pleasing visuals make it a nice package wrapped around the GeForce 256 chip. The overall image quality is quite good. And the $182 price--reflecting a $47 drop from last month--is outstanding.

WHAT'S NOT: A better bundle would be nice. While Elsa tosses in a CD-ROM full of game demos, the Erazor X lacks full games and 3D applications. The lower price buys you a board with Single Data Rate memory, which is now below the curve in gaming technology. Like other GeForce 256 cards with SDR memory, the Erazor X provided a little too much contrast when displaying Quake III's sky.

WHAT ELSE: A lengthy six-year warranty and toll-free technical support sweeten the deal; tech support is available for 10 hours each weekday.

BEST USE: With its good image quality, the Erazor X makes a viable alternative to the more expensive DDR-based GeForce boards--especially if a sweet price is more to your taste than the latest in hot gaming technology.
