SUMMARY



WHAT'S HOT: The 8X/4X/32X CED-8080B is a good all-around performer and one of the quietest drives we've tested. We especially appreciated the drive's extra sturdy disc tray. Documentation is concise, yet it covers everything you need to know about the installation process; the manual even includes instructions for enabling DMA access under Windows. DMA access can greatly improve drive performance, but this topic is often left out of user guides. The CED-8080B comes with Adaptec's Easy CD Creator 3.5 for CD premastering chores and DirectCD 2.5 to handle the packet writing.

WHAT'S NOT: The software gremlin that we've seen affect DirectCD overwrite times in the past struck the CED-8080B especially hard. The drive took more than 9 minutes to overwrite 100MB of data--the slowest performance we've seen to date. Using our in-house copy of Prassi's abCD cured the problem.

WHAT ELSE: LG Electronics provides a one-year warranty and toll-free technical support for 12 hours on weekdays.

BEST USE: The CED-8080B is a solid 8X/4X/32X drive at an affordable price.
