'Shamu' may be Google's giant Nexus phone

So Google really is making a phone even larger than the iPhone 6 Plus and Galaxy Note 4

9to5Google says it confirmed that a Motorola-built phone code-named Shamu will be a super-sized version of the Moto X, rocking a 5.92-inch diagonal display with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. A nearly 6-inch screen will dwarf the leading phablets from Samsung and Apple. Fortunately it has a 3,200-mAh battery to power that screen, according to the report.

Why it matters: Phablets were once outliers in the world of smartphones. When most models' displays measured between 4 and 5 inches diagonally and could fit comfortably in one hand, phablets' screens exceeded 5 inches and demanded two-fisted attention.

Google's newest Nexus phone, typically held up as a benchmark of stock Android for all, takes a surprising risk in catering to such a specific market. Yet the move indicates that the Galaxy Note line, and now the iPhone 6 Plus, have made the phablet a more viable option to customers who in the past might have blown it off as too unwieldy.

Not one Nexus, but two?

Lost in the hoopla over the forthcoming giant Nexus is the possibility that Google may be following Apple in releasing two devices, the other a more modest-sized phone. Hardware benchmarking site GFXBench reported a mystery device with a 5.2-inch, 1440p display that could be a reworked version of the Moto X.

With a report Wednesday that Android L should hit by November 1, we shouldn't have to wait long to learn whether this is a whale's tale.

Update 2:30pm: An anonymous tipster posted the following photo in the comments of a couple of Android sites, claiming that this is the phone in question (left) compared to the already-large LG G3. If this is the case, then we can only assume that Google must be working on two different sizes for Nexus devices, because this is just way. too. big.
