Music streaming service Deezer is going beyond music and adding podcasts in an attempt to attract more users. The company announced Friday that it had acquired Stitcher, the popular podcast and live radio streaming app available on Android and iOS, and built into more than 50 car models from makers such as BMW, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar and Mazda.
A price tag for the deal was not announced.
What this means for you: Stitcher users shouldn’t notice any change in their favorite audio app after the Deezer acquisition. The two companies said Stitcher’s standalone Android and iOS apps would remain as-is. The catalog of podcasts and live radio shows will also be built into Deezer’s primary service to add more variety to its existing music service.
What’s a Deezer?
Deezer is a popular music subscription streaming service with 16 million monthly users across more than 180 countries. That’s admittedly a far cry from Spotify’s more than 40 million monthly active users worldwide in nearly 60 countries.
Even with its wide global reach, however, Deezer has a minimal footprint in the U.S. In September, Deezer rolled out a high-definition audio service to Sonos home audio system owners—its first offering stateside.
It’s not clear whether Deezer plans a more general launch for American music fans. Deezer has avoided the U.S. until now, citing market oversaturation. In November 2013, however, Deezer CEO told the Agence France Presse (AFP) that 2014 would be “an American year” [French language] for the company.
So far, Deezer’s “American year” has been very boring. There’s still a little time for Deezer to join the ranks of U.S. streaming services in the two months left before we ring in 2015, however.
But just as before, Deezer would be entering a music streaming market that is full of competing services such as Beats Music, Google Play Music All Access, Rdio, Rhapsody, Spotify, Xbox Music Pass, and Internet radio offerings like Pandora.
