Some products shake up a market. The Nest Learning thermostat rocked the HVAC world, and its looks as though Eero could trigger an earthquake in the home-networking market.
The tiny startup reported today that within 2.5 hours of becoming available for pre-order on Tuesday, February 3—the same day the product and the company that makes it was announced—it had booked more than $100,000 in sales of its unconventional mesh-capable Wi-Fi router. As of last Thursday, the company had pre-sold more than $1 million in inventory.
When Eero CEO and co-founder Nick Weaver showed me a prototype two weeks back, he said the company was already fully funded by venture capitalists, and the router was ready to go to manufacturing. The purpose of opening pre-order sales effort was to determine how many components the company would need to order.
Now Eero knows. In a blog post, Weaver said 90 percent of pre-orders were for the three-pack kit. If Eero's pre-sold $1 million worth of routers, it’ll need to build at least 10,033 units. That’s not bad for an untested product from a company that just came out of stealth mode two weeks ago.
If you want to make a leap of faith—and get in on the significant pre-order discounts Eero is offering—you’ll need to act before Sunday, February 15. After Sunday, prices for a three-unit pack will rise from $299 to $499, and single-unit prices will go from $125 to $199. The company expects to deliver its first orders to customers in the early-summer timeframe.
